Merry Christmas!!!

First things first. 2018 has been the best year of my life. I’ve been basically asymptomatic, off of all medications, and feeling better than I ever thought possible. I haven’t been depressed since last February. That’s coming up on a year free of depression. I literally didn’t think that was possible. This Christmas was the best my Dad and I have felt ever. That should be the takeaway here. It’s winter, we aren’t on antidepressants and we had a great time on vacation. Life is awesome. The support I’ve found going through these random food things has been amazing. I’m spoken to so many people who have also recovered or are on the road to recovery and it makes my day, every day. I am confident that I can figure out how to reintroduce new foods eventually, so stick with me until that happens. I’m hoping I’ll be able to figure that out this year.

Now for the negatives: I am NOT less sensitive on this diet. Neither is my Dad. It is not solving all of the underlying problems, whatever they are ( I now know one is C. Diff – gross).

We went out to eat in Palm Beach, Florida, (where we spent some time before Christmas), and the steakhouse that we went to didn’t scrub the grill. I never eat out because you can’t expect a restaurant to be careful enough. I literally got bloated WHILE I was eating. I could feel it happening. They later told us that the grill probably had olive oil and garlic on it. That’s it. I wouldn’t even classify those foods as the “evil” foods and I still had a response to them. This is me the morning after the meal. I look pregnant. It literally hurt my gut. Not pleasant. My colon felt like it wanted to die. From olive oil and garlic on the grill. Seriously? Sorry the photo is so dark, this is before I knew what was going on and just angrily snapped a quick pic:

I was bloated for almost a week, my digestion was completely screwed, and I had massive brain fog the next day. Massive. My mood didn’t get hit right away, it was just brain fog. It literally felt like my brain had been replaced with cotton balls. I lost my sunglasses, I didn’t know what floor of the mall I was on when we went shopping. It was intense. Then the day after that my mood took a turn for the worse but the brain fog lessened. I felt iffy for about 3 days. Very minor compared to how it could be. I wouldn’t say I got depressed, just a bit more volatile than usual (I’m normally very stable) and a bit weepy. Really manageable and not disastrous at all but still definitely noticeable. Mostly it was the digestive stuff that concerned me. My skin also broke out on my chin and my shoulders and it never breaks out:

Still kind of bloated but a lot better. So yeah, I’m not less sensitive. Which means, while this diet does heal leaky gut, that is definitely not the only issue that’s going on. We’ll see what happens after the gut flora transplant. I’m hopeful. Maybe that’ll at least mean if some plant matter TOUCHES my meat I’ll be okay, because this is ridic.

    Thanks for the update. I came across many posts in the keto/carnivore community where people report sensetivity to some foods they were absolutely fine with before going carnivore. This pattern suggests that going carnivore will always make you sensitive to ALL no-carnivore foods. I get that the reprecussions in your case is just too much but a valid experiment would be to insist on the newly introduced food for a while, may be the body will eventually reintegrated it again. This is better done by someone else who would have lower symptoms than you Mikhaila. Better done by reintegrating a food they were fine with before.

      Actually I know someone who managed to get back to basically my original diet (but with apples and sweet potatoes). The first month was a bit rough but he’s better now with probiotics as well. I just can’t take probiotics… But I have seen being able to go back to some vegetables and fruit work!

    Although your dietary sensitivity is extreme, I think most people, like myself, are more sensitive than we care to admit. We choose to deal with the gas, bloating, inflammation, etc for the fleeting pleasures of taste and mouth-feel, because we don’t have the crippling depression and joint damage. In a very real sense you’re at an advantage because you HAVE to eat clean. The rest of us are more tolerant of the diets THAT ARE DAMAGING OUR HEALTH.

    I reintroduced lettuce and cruciferous vegetables a bit ago. At first, it bothered me but I adjusted fast. I think I’ll have to be careful what I introduce and plan to keep it a restricted keto. I eat a little olive oil (not much) and spices are ok for me. I feel much better on carnivore/keto type eating. More about my diet journey is available at I hope you do well with the transplant. you might try Berberine. It’s really helped my gut. And I can’t take probiotics at all. Best to you!

      p.s. It just floated back to me that when I did all the tests I had at my functional medicine doctor that I had some gut bacteria as well. They had prescribed Berberine, but I didn’t take much of it and sporadically. Lately I started taking it in a bigger dose and consistently to help with high cholesterol and it seemed to really help my gut. I can’t remember which bacteria it was–maybe my paperwork is around here somewhere. I thought I might have had SiBO as well. I tended toward bloating and constipation and that is gone. Maybe I go too often. But read it works for diarrhea as well.

      That’s super interesting. The active ingredient is activated charcoal. So apparently taking antibiotics with activated charcoal reduces the detrimental effect the antibiotics have on the microbiome but doesn’t change the plasma concentration of the antibiotic. That is super cool.

        Apparently one can take spore-biotics with anti-biotics and the anti-biotics do not affect the spore-biotics, which leads me to think that they may be good for reintroducing pro-biotics without the ‘side effects’!

          Apparently, the lacto-bacillus or one of the major cultures in them is a big problem for people. I think they make them without it. I ordered some, but I’ve felt so much better without it (and yogurt), that I’ve just left it out. Since I added lettuce back in, I’ve had a bit of vinegar, but I suspect I have trouble with fermented food. I know I have mold allergies. Had a touch of horseradish as well, but have stayed away from things with yeast in them as much as possible. I suspect Mikhaila will need to be very careful with them.

    Sorry to hear of your bad steakhouse experience, but thank you for sharing. I would not have thought about anything like that. I don’t like eating out much either, now I have another reason. Hope all goes well with your treatment.

    glad you didn’t get a full blown 30-day reaction from that!

    Do you still brush your teeth on the all beef diet?

    Oh and i’ve been all beef for 5 months now but i’m still not 100% recovered, i’m like 80% better, still have loads of brain fog, some fatigue and just not feeling ‘happy’ but also not ‘depressed’ which is in itself already a big improvement.

    I hope to be 100% again soon!

    I’m feeling TRIGGERED!!! haha…just kidding…well, I am stressing out a bit from this, but I’m not mad about it. I am hoping for some clarification. As my husband and I plan to embark on this journey, I’d like to know if C Diff might be linked to the diet or if you just (unfortunately) came into contact with it somehow. My husband nearly died from C Diff a few years ago…come to think of it he hasn’t ever been tested again…but I would prefer never to relive that situation. I’m hoping to plan for as many plot twists as I can and to find out as much as possible before starting so that if trouble arises we won’t panic and give up.

    Mikhaila, I have a nearly identical symptom set to you. I’m fully carnivore for 6 months with great improvement. I wanted to mention that a lot of restaurants, even if you request nothing on the meat, will still coat it with starch prior to grilling to give it that nice “charred” look. So it may not have been the olive oil or garlic. Restaurant kitchens are basically food prep factories, and often the staff does not speak English natively, so it’s very difficult to get the “nothing on my steak” request fulfilled.

    This happened to me over my recent holiday trip and the bloating/brain fog ruined the second half of my vacation. 1 hour after eating I had trouble walking due to joint stiffness. I decided to give up eating at restaurants and will fast instead when I have to go. It’s just not worth it…
