I got an email the other day asking me if I took vitamins or supplements to make sure I got everything I needed from my diet. I actually get this question a lot so I thought I’d write a post about it.
I’ve had my vitamins tested a number of times throughout my life, including after I limited my diet and during pregnancy. My vitamins are all good and my B12 level is slightly higher than normal (probably all the meat). I used to be deficient in zinc (when I was a kid, before the diet). That seems to have resolved itself! If you’re worried, download an app (I used cronometer – https://cronometer.com/ – it’s free and has an app!) and write down what you eat in a day. It’ll tell you what you need more of. After I started using the app I realized I needed more fat in my diet (so now I use more coconut oil when I cook, and more olive oil on my salad).
About 2 months ago I was worried about my calcium intake so I started taking calcium. Turns out my diet was already high enough in calcium (I eat a ton of collard greens every day) so I stopped taking it. I’ve found that when I don’t eat as many greens for a couple of days I start craving them and up my intake for the next couple of days. Interestingly, at the beginning of my pregnancy I craved cheese like crazy even though the smell made me want to die. I figured maybe I wasn’t getting enough calcium and increased my greens intake and boom, cheese cravings were gone. I don’t know what that means but my body does impress (as well as irritate me) all the time.
I’ve spoken with my doctor, and he told me that grains aren’t necessary to get nutrients from, and most of the world survives dairy free. I wouldn’t worry too much about your vitamins with this diet, (but if you are, you can always get them tested and/or talk to your doctor).
Green vegetables have a lot of vitamins, and meat gives you all the protein you need.
If you are concerned, talk to your doctor, I’ve also made a blog post about a list of some vitamins that I’ve found I can take without reacting to (in the Products I Like category).
